Also known as 'fire earthenware',
the production of Glazed Pottery is very extensive in the States
of Michoacan, Mexico, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Guanajuato and Puebla.
This particular glazing technique was brought to Mexico from
Europe during the Colonial days of Mexico's history and quickly
adoped by the native Indians. Glazed Pottery is very prized by
its owners. We use large diameter pots with glazed interiors
as serving dishes and take them straight from the stovetop to
the table. And the urns and vases are just beautiful. |

Masks, religious images and household
and decorative items are crafted in Glazed Pottery; the designs
are from the very simple to the very detailed. Some of the most
decorative pieces on display in the Mexican home are Glazed pieces
and they are seen in some form or another in all Mexican kitchens.
Pieces are worked in molds then decorated with thin brushes by
the 'esgrafiado' method which consists of several layers of paint
decorated with a pricker before going through the firing process.
Glazed Pottery is also very popular at the table as complete
sets of dinner ware, called 'bahia'. |
