Of all the Colonial Spanish
skills introduced into Mexico, handblown glassware has become
one of the most important artisan industries. Since 1542, when
the first glassware workshop was organized in Puebla, the production
of glass goods has been constant in Mexican popular arts and
crafts.
Today, the principle glass
workshops are in Mexico City, Durango, Guadalajara and Texcoco.

Interestingly, of all the
techniques for manufacturing glass, Blown Glass is the most popular
and extended in Mexico. The major difference in production today,
compared to Colonial times, is that gas or petrol is used in
the firing process instead of coal or wood. (Like everything
we offer, we are procuring from a clean industry.)
Even the artisan's tools are
virtually the same since the sixteenth century. Out of a shapeless
mass of forged glass, they make pitchers, fruit bowls and compotes
with graceful contours; and goblets, glasses, cups and mugs crowned
in beautiful colors; and vases and decanters in original designs.
The creativeness of Mexican
glass blowers is unlimited, they are very skilled in its mass
manufacture and it is a craft the artisans really enjoy. You
will enjoy the pieces, too. |
