Our Visit to Majolica Artisan Shop

Our Visit to Majolica Artisan ShopThese beautiful Majolica items are all made by hand and painted by hand. The photos below show a typical owner/artisan operated little factory. This gentleman has one helper for the kiln and general shop work and one assistant who works from his house in decorating and painting the items. And otherwise he creates, makes and paints all the pieces.

(Above) This large kiln is used to fire larger pieces. After first firing then the pieces are decorated then fired again. The double firing is the distinctive feature of Majolica. (Below) The second, smaller kiln is used for smaller pieces. Both kilns are fired using diesel fuel.

(Top Left) The figures and more complicated floreros (vases) are made from molds. (Above) Vases and more symmetrical pieces are 'thrown' on a potter's wheel - he uses his feet to turn the wheel; note the wheel table behind the mug. Pieces like the mug then have any necessary additions added by hand before firing. Like most single artisans, he tends to make what he is in the 'mood' to make but is very cooperative on custom orders.
