Majolica is a pottery type
introduced to Mexico by the Spaniards who settled in Puebla.
The distinctive quality of Majolica is that it requires two firings:
One to harden the clay and the second to incorporate the enamels.
All our Majolica is hand decorated
by artisans who use thin brushes to paint their designs.
Every piece is unique and
is revered by its owner. Majolica pieces are very distinctive
works of art and its Talavera designs, on their characteristic
cream colored background, are most sought by collectors. |

Majolica is extremely varied
in its style types. From Puebla, it shows a mixture of decorations
and styles mainly that of Spanish and Asian features mixed with
Indian legacy. Much Majolica pottery from Guanajuato is full
of warm, soothing colors and show comfortable everyday life scenes
and designs. Tlaxcala pottery, as well as that from Puebla, is
known for its Talavera designs and decorative traditions of olden
times; and from Jalisco come the best of the Vajillas. |
|
With its multitude of designs,
Majolica has always been popular in Mexico. In homes, we see
it architecturally combined in the form of basins and tiles;
on the dining table as tea sets, dishes, platters and bowls;
around the house as decorative plates, urns, flower pots and
vases. |
