In the State of Oaxaca, artisans
from Arrazola carve fantastic figures from the wood of the Huanacaxtle,
Copal, Tzompastle and Orange trees. These figures, known as Alebrijes,
combine features of real and mythical animals and are painted
with a thin brush in bright native colors. (These Alebrije images

When the completed painted Alebrije
figure is brought to a high polish finish it is known as polychromed.
Alebrijes come in all sizes from the miniature to the larger
pieces and are perfect as a mantle decoration or unique centerpiece.
They will brighten any decor setting and each figure is personally
signed by the maker. |

Very popular design additions
to Alebrijes is to incorporate them with a Nativity Scene. All
figures are from the same wood type and are painted and finished
in the same manner whether a painted or polychromed figure. Alebrijes
Nativity figures are always brightly painted and never are two
sets finished in the same manner, each is unique and reflects
the character of the artisan. |

Similar to Alebrijes, artists
in Guerrero, in the basin of the Balsas River, produce painted
wood and polychrome figures which reflect their traditional way
of life. They paint country themes on wooden fish that tell tales
of daily life and include scenes reflecting local traditions
and sea landscapes. Their art pieces are pleasant and pleasing
