Palm Basketry has been in use
in the country since ancient times. Palm leaf weaving is so extended
in Mexico, that in many regions it is still common to see people
weaving while they walk, talk or watch their cattle graze. Palm
weaving has been passed on from generation to generation and
we support its continuation by marketing palm products. |

Palm Baskets can be of a flat
weave or bundled into round weaves. Intricate flat weaves are
used in chair seats and backs and for floor mats and table mats
in the homes of the locals and for making baskets with square
bottoms and unique designs to contain their possessions. |

Artisans use the flat weave to
make soft, flexible, personal objects to market such items as
handbags, hats, table mats and beautiful, soft little baskets
with perfect fitting lids which we use around the house to set
items that we do not want to be misplaced. It is an amazing skill
the craftsmen have to deftly integrate dyed palm 'threads' into
their work as they make the intricate geometric designs in flat
woven objects. |

The lovely hues of dyed palm
pieces are especially pleasant to see in round weave basketry.
Before the days of plastic, baskets were everything in the life
of the native people of Mexico. Note the distinct characteristic
openness of round weave palm baskets in comparison to baskets
made from other materials, their handiwork is very evident. |

Palm leaf items took on more
importance in Mexico after Christianity was introduced to the
country in Spanish Colonial times. With such a rich heritage
of palm useage in the country, Palm Sunday takes on more significance
here than in many other places; Palm Sunday services are very
much decorated and a delight to attend and many personal palm
items are taken to Church to be blessed on this special Holy
Day.
