Our Visit to the
Brunida Factory

Our Visit to the Brunida Factory

These particular pieces are made by a single family in their home. The children learn the tradition as they assist in the craft that was taught to they fathers by their great grandmother.

Each piece is formed by hand, over molds - even the plates, then pieced together to make the final design. The raw material, the clay which gives the pieces their tone, is gathered from nearby. The finished form is then smoothed with river stone and set in the yard to cure.

Ana is talking with one of the artisans about his designs and inquiring about custom pieces. Pieces may be similar in form but no two are exactly alike.

Ana listens as they discuss when more product will be ready for market.

Paint tones are determined by the mixture of water with the same clay as used in molding the piece. The more the concentration of clay the darker the tone. Designs are to the artisan's descretion and reflect their heritage and are embellished by the feelings of the moment. After drying from the paint, items are fired in the adobe kiln in the backyard. Fuel for the kiln are sticks gathered from nearby fields.

Here in the bedroom are pieces ready to be fired and pieces waiting to be painted. We choose what we have interest for next visit.
