Burnishing as a technique dates
to Pre Columbian times and implies closing the pores of the clay
to make it water proof; pottery pieces thus made have a very
smooth surface and are especially distinctive. Burnished Pottery
is decorated freehand, with a thin brush, in beautiful designs
of everyday life, geometric patterns or multi colored forms inspired
by Nature. Many items both useful and decorative are thus crafted.
Burnished jars and cups are very popular in Mexico and are used
throughout the country. |

Burnishing is done when the piece
is raw or during white washing and this imparts water proofing.
With a quartz, an agate or a river stone, artisans polish the
surface of the clay until it shimmers. Burnished figurines are
very attractive. |

Creation of Burnished Pottery
is such a tradition among the Indian people and so extensive
in use in Mexican homes, we have many examples of the craft,
too many for this page. Note how clay from different regions
imparts its distinctive color to the piece. Please see the pages
with more beautiful examples from Puebla and Jalisco, places which are the heart of the
craft. E-mail us about Burnished Pottery, you will
enjoy them as much as the unique sample pieces shown here. |
