| Amate Paper is to Meso American cultures what papyrus was to the Egyptians as it is the original material which the indigenous people of Mexico recorded their chronicles and left their legacies. Amate Paper is obtained from the cork of certain varieties of wild fig trees. After cooking the cork in water with limestone, the resultant fiber is washed, mashed into sheets with a small stone hammer, and dried. This technique for making Amate Paper is the same today as it was in yesterday, having been preserved through practical use throughout the centuries. The Otomies from San Pablito Pahuatlan, in the northern mountains of Puebla, are the main producers of Amate Paper. |

Thirty years ago, potters from the Balsa River Basin, in the State of Guerrero, changed their craftsman interest from making and decorating pottery to that of decorating Amate Paper. Before their interest in the artform, scenes on Amate were typically limited to decorations and designs; now they have revived the tradition of recording the events of local culture and daily lives and personal ideas and forever preserving them on Amate. We offer Amate of all sizes - widths and lengths - from the simple designs to the complex scenes that tell the stories of today's village artisan. E-mail us your requirements and color schemes. All are suitable for framing. |
